Mean Kilometres Between Failures

Mean Kilometres Between Failures (MKBF) is a service performance to measure the reliability of a railway system, derived from the distance trains travel before a failure (resulting in a delay of more than 5 minutes) occurs in a period of 12-months moving window. It is a Service Performance Reliability measured in adherence to EN 50126, an international railway standard.Since Prasarana introduced MKBF as key performance indicator for operation supported by implementation of multiple strategic initiatives, the overall MKBF performance (KJL, AGL, KGL excluding MRL) has significantly improved by 75% in Year 2023 (140,000 km) compared with performance in Year 2022 (80,000 km).Based on the current performance trend as demonstrated above, the analysis shows that the overall target of 1 million MKBF (KJL, AGL, KGL excluding MRL) and 150,000 km for MRL by the Third Quarter of 2026 is achievable which ultimately delivering high service reliability to our passengers.

MKBF

As of April 2024 (update will be on monthly basis)

MKBF – Relevant Failure

As of April 2024 (update will be on monthly basis)

Failures which cause delays of more than 5 minutes and have impact on MKBF are recognised as relevant failures. An example of relevant failure is when a train stops moving for more than 5 minutes due to system failure as a result from faulty train component or signalling system failure. The newly established Failure Review Panel (FRP) consisting of all key technical personnel is tasked to review, verify and analyse all of the recorded failures in a systematic order to ensure adequate measures are taken for improvement.

  • Kajang Line
  • For MRT Kajang Line, the line has recorded a total of 22 relevant failures as of 30 June 2023, against the 16 maximum allowable number of relevant failures for the year 2023.
  • As previously reported, these failures are attributed to the unexpected degradation of parts caused by excessive vibrations and noise due to abnormal wheel wear of the train units.
  • The wheel replacement programme to mitigate the failures is currently ongoing and on schedule.
  • Deployment of Transit Officers (TO) onboard all trains throughout operating hours to aid service recovery, is also in progress.
