Intensive English Program (IEP)

Introduction to the Intensive English Program (IEP)

Each of the five levels in the IEP is divided into four sections.  The anticipated maximum length of time that a student spends in a section is four weeks; the anticipated maximum length at any one level is sixteen weeks.  There are many factors involved in learning a new language, so there are exceptional cases when a student can remain in a section or a level longer.

The school intentionally maintains small class sizes in order to maximize the interaction of the instructor and students, which is crucial for developing proficiency in the English language.  The integrative approach, which is the methodology chosen for the IEP classroom, enables the student to learn the language in a natural setting in which all aspects of language acquisition—listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation—are equally developed.   This approach, coupled with the small class sizes and the quality of instruction, enables students to make significant progress in their studies.

In addition to the regular morning IEP classes, interested students may also take two hours in the afternoon.  This component allows the student to focus on specialized subjects such as Business English, Academic Writing, TOEIC, TOEFL, Conversation, Idioms, and more.

Approved for F-1 visa holders, this two-day course allows students to combine classroom work and field trips to exciting local venues that give them the opportunity to practice what they learn.  Perfect for those wanting to learn more about San Diego and American culture.
